Sempervivum 'Red Lion'
Sempervivum Red Lion is also called "Hen and Chicks Red Lion" Succulent. The rosettes are vibrant rich red with green tips and sometimes have yellow variegated color as well. Among the easiest plants to grow, Hen-and-chicks tolerate heat, drought and neglect with style. Useful in rock gardens, container gardens of all types, rock walls and rooftop and vertical gardens. Hundreds of varieties exist. All types form a low cushion or carpet of fleshy leaves, tiny new plants appearing in a circle around the mother in the middle. This selection is prized for its succulent green foliage that is washed with deep, ruby red. Spikes of pastel flowers appear in summer. Easily increased by just removing the small baby rosettes and replanting in a new location at almost any time. After flowering, the mother rosette dies to leave room for the chicks; remove by tugging gently at the base of the bloom stem.
- Light : Full Sun or Partial Shade
- Water : Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Never let your succulents sit in water. Do NOT water on the leaves. If you water from beneath by letting the plant sit in a saucer of water, make sure to pour off any excess water after a few minutes. The hotter it is outside, the faster your soil will dry out, so you’ll need to water more often if you live in a hot area. Water with caution in winter, as the plant can lose its roots if the soil stays cold and wet for extended periods; protect from frost to prevent scarring.
